I want to buy an acer notebook but there doesn’t seem to be much point if I can’t get mobile broadband for it without much difficulty or expense

Short answer, yes.
First you want to determine if you are limiting yourself to a particular provider, and determine what providers you have to select from in your area.
Then get a listing of the usb wireless cards or pcmcia wireless cards they support/sell.
Then search for the hardware support on some of the linux hardware compatibility lists, such as http://www.ubuntuhcl.org (not just ubuntu compatibility) or http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/index.php or http://www.linuxcompatible.org/compatibility.html
